Green Primary Care

Green Primary Care

Welcome to high quality, low carbon primary care

The climate emergency is a health emergency. Climate change threatens the foundations of good health, with direct and immediate consequences for our patients, the public and the NHS. As the biggest employer in this country, there is more that the NHS, working together with its partners can do. The NHS makes up approximately 5% of the UK’s carbon footprint and is striving to be the first national health service to achieve net zero carbon by 2040.

The national Greener NHS programme is in its third of delivery and has so far focused on our main Trusts. In north east London the ICB have focused on the impact of primary care and intend for the resources on this page to support a high quality, low carbon primary care service:

  • We have four Net Zero Clinical Leads, who are GPs from across NEL, who have one session a week dedicated to delivering the ICS Green Plan
  • You can download our Green Primary Care Guide which sets out the first things to work through in your practice and includes links to supporting materials
  • We have a series of webinars, led by the Net Zero Clinical Leads, discussing how climate change relates to primary care and provide advice on how to act
  • You can see the Green Impact for Health Toolkit leaderboard and supporting materials, including a travel survey template
  • Check out the news items for details on the latest sustainable healthcare training courses that are available.

If you want to speak to anyone at NHS North East London ICB about our Green Plan please contact us on nelondonicb.nelgreenteam@nhs.net

“Working with a vision to improve the environmental sustainability of General Practice gives us the opportunity to transform the way we practice medicine. It enables us to prioritise evidence based, low carbon interventions. It makes us stop and think before we prescribe more medicines, it makes us work with our whole team to provide holistic advice on moving more, healthier diets. Practising sustainably is good for the practice, good for the patient and good for the planet”, Dr Emma Radcliffe, Net Zero Clinical Lead.

Thank you in advance for your time, participation, and commitment to sustainability. Together, we can create a positive impact and inspire others to follow suit.
