The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan commits to encouraging all NHS organisations to have staff feedback processes in place to ensure staff feedback is listened to and acted upon. Evidence shows this is beneficial to the experience and retention of staff, organisational outcomes and patient care.
General practice teams can now participate in their own tailored version of the NHS Staff Survey. NEL ICB is participating in the roll out of this 2024 General Practice Staff Survey (GPSS) and will be working with NHS England to support and co-ordinate the activity. This includes working with practice teams to collate staff lists in August and promote the survey when it is available for staff to complete in October. Participation is entirely voluntary and individual responses will be confidential.
We hope that all practice staff will take the opportunity to share their views.
The GPSS is coordinated on behalf of NHS England by the NHS Staff Survey Coordination Centre (SCC), based at Picker, an independent health and social care charity. The survey will be open for eight weeks from October and Picker will send reminders about the survey throughout that period to ensure general practice staff have their voice heard.
GPSS FAQs
Why should we participate?
– You will get a sense of how happy (or not) your staff are, and over time you will be able to gauge if things are getting better or worse within your practice.
– You will be able to see if staff wellbeing is influenced by internal factors, as well as external – and you will have a sense of elements of staff wellbeing that you can influence and improve.
– You will be able to compare your practice as an employer locally and nationally.
– As the survey is completely anonymous you get an objective view from staff without fear of repercussions.
– We’re very aware that front line staff can be at the receiving end of patient frustrations, and rarely thanked for their efforts. This survey will allow practice staff from all departments and levels to air their concerns and views; this can help practice managers and leaders put in place mechanisms to mitigate issues and help staff maintain wellbeing in their workplace
– All of this can help aid retention at your practice – with happier staff and saving on recruitment costs!
Staff List Collation
Work has now started on pulling together the list of people who will be invited to participate in the General Practice Staff Survey.
Practice managers and support staff will be collating this list of their employees in practices, PCNs and federations so they can be sent individual invitations via email. If staff members do not have an individual email address, they will be sent a paper invitation with a unique QR code linking you to the survey.
