Criteria: Eithera definitive Asthma diagnosis or Wheeze and meet one or more of the criteria below:
- PICU Admission in the last 12 month
- Required IV therapy this admission (e.g IV magnesium, IV Salbutamol, IV aminophylline) Not antibiotics
- 2+ attendances to A&E or admissions in the last 12 months
- Newly diagnosed asthmatic this admission or attendance
- Any child with asthma where there are concerns with adherence and compliance (by parents/child) leading to multiple attendances, poor school attendance or poor quality of life with asthma symptoms.
Tertiary Asthma Nurse RLH
The asthma nurse at the Royal London Hospital covers the patients referred from the Northeast London network requiring further support in treating any difficult asthma cases. We work in conjunction with the tertiary asthma lead consultant and the local community asthma nurses within the network. We aim to provide specialised support in order to improve outcomes symptoms with the aim of discharging back to local care once asthma is under control. Some patients will require further specialised treatment called biologics. We provide support in teaching, prescribing and providing homecare with this if needed. We are based at the Royal London Hospital.
Referral criteria
- PICU admission in the last 12 months
- Direct referrals via NEL asthma MDT only
- On Biologics for Asthma
- Must be under tertiary paediatric respiratory consultant.

Tower Hamlets Asthma Nurse
Children and Young People’s Specialist Asthma Nurse Service
The service supports children and young people from their 5th birthday up to their 18th birthday.
Please note:
- The service does not provide diagnostic assessments, spirometry, or FeNO testing.
- For children under 5 years of age, where there are concerns about respiratory symptoms, please seek advice and guidance from General Paediatrics in line with NEL guidelines.
Our Specialist Asthma Nurse service is based at The Bridge, Mile End Bancroft Road London E1 4DG and available Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (excluding bank holidays).
The service work closely with primary care, health visitors, school nurses, and secondary care colleagues to provide coordinated management for children and young people with asthma and related allergic conditions.
Service focus is:
- Supporting families to manage asthma, wheeze, allergies, and eczema effectively at home.
- Reducing avoidable emergency department attendances and hospital admissions.
- Promoting self-management through personalised asthma action plans and education.
- Ensuring safe and evidence-based care in line with national guidance (BTS/SIGN/NICE).
Referrals should be made for children and young people who would benefit from enhanced nursing support or education around management, adherence, or inhaler technique.

High-risk’ Referral Criteria
- Hospital admission or ≥ 2 exacerbations of wheeze/asthma in the past 6 months (this includes courses of steroids prescribed in primary care)
- Evidence of Salbutamol over-use (>twice a week / >6 inhaler devices a year)
- Poorly controlled symptoms (ACT <19, school missed, exercise limitation)
- BTS Asthma Management Step 4 or above
- Parent/professional concerns about compliance
- Missing lots of time off school due to asthma
- Children 5 year of age till 18th birthday
