Expression of Interest (EOI): GP with Extended Role (GPwER) in Gastroenterology Training Programme

We are delighted to announce that NHS England is providing funding for a further 28 places of 2-year GP with Extended Role (GPwER) in Gastroenterology Training Programme. This will be the second year of national roll out and training will start in January 2027.
GIRFT is supporting Integrated Care Boards to submit Expressions of Interest to participate in this training programme. They would need to identify interested GPs, along with associated secondary care gastroenterology teams interested in supporting the training and onward role of the GPwER as part of their local workforce.
This programme aims to equip the GP with the knowledge and skills required to work at the interface between primary and secondary care, providing clinical services and support in the community. The programme has been successfully piloted in the Southwest of England since 2023, and following this was adopted for national roll out with the first cohort of the programme starting in January 2026.
This initiative supports outpatient and elective care transformation by embedding skilled GPs into gastroenterology pathways to strengthen primary care, improve referral management and expand community-based specialist capacity.
