BHRUT – Advance nurse triage in Gynae ED

Posted on:

BHRUT are piloting an advanced nurse triage system in Gyane ED starting at the end of October 2024 on
Sunrise B at Queen’s.
A possible outcome for patients triaged by the Band 6 nurse is a referral back to their GP.
We are keen for this pilot to be successful and support from GP’s is crucial in achieving this.

Advanced Triage Nurse Pilot – Why are they doing this ?

  • Gynaecology Emergency Department (GED) is currently identified as a high-risk area due to not
delivering the NHS 95% 4-hour standard Type 2 target.
  • Over the past three years, the GED has experienced a statistically significant surge in
attendances, with patients presenting with increasingly complex conditions requiring enhanced
    care.
  • Despite steadily increasing demand Queen’s Gynae ED continues to perform better than local
comparators; However, this performance comes at a cost, with staff reporting burn out, high
rates of sickness and worsening retention rates reflecting the strain that GED staff are working under.
