NHS Knowledge and Library Services for GPs

Register for an OpenAthens account: NHS OpenAthens is free to the NHS to access resources subscribed by NHS England/ Health Education England.

  • Go to the https://openathens.nice.org.uk/
  • Click on the ‘Register’ button to fill the online registration form, Add your NHS email ID and Primary care and ICB staff in North East London’ as your organisation.
  • Tick the box agreeing to the Terms & Conditions.
  • Click Submit.
  • You will receive an email containing a link; you must click the link to complete the process and to choose a password for your account.

Your evidence-based resources available via NHS OpenAthens FREE to the NHS which are funded by Health Education England – Login via OpenAthens and select ‘My Resources’ to access resources:

  • BMJ Best Practice: This is a point-of-care tool that updates regularly and includes patient leaflets, it covers 1000+ illnesses and conditions and 11000+ differential diagnoses inc 90% of the most common clinical conditions. Within each topic, BMJ BP has treatment algorithms that list medications for patient groups and sub-patient groups. The Comorbidities Manager supports the management of the whole patient by including guidance on the treatment of a patient’s acute condition alongside their pre-existing comorbidities. This resource is free to all NHS England staff, although for the full summaries an NHS OpenAthens username and password is required (https://openathens.nice.org.uk/
BMJ Best Practice quick link for North East London primary care workforce to access BMJ Best Practice without a login.   • Oxford Academic: Access to medical and healthcare eBooks, including Oxford Handbook of Clinical Pharmacy, Oxford Handbook of General Practice; Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialities; Oxford Handbook of Genitourinary Medicine, HIV, and Sexual Health etc.
  • Kortext eBooks: Browse eBook titles including Symptom sorter, 100 Cases in General Practice, 100 Cases in Dermatology, 100 Cases in Paediatrics, Diabetes Management: a patient-centred care, Bates guide to Physical Examination and History Taking.
  • Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry: The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry (latest edition) is the essential evidence-based handbook on the safe and effective prescribing of psychotropic agents. Free access via NHS OpenAthens account.
  • Browzine: Access full-text journal articles subscribed by NHS, including the BMJ.

Free Knowledge and Library services:

  • NHS OpenAthens support: All NHS staff and students on placement are eligible for an OpenAthens account. Login details identify you as an NHS staff member and enable you to access resources subscribed by NHS / HEE.  Self-register for an OpenAthens account – go to https://openathens.nice.org.uk/, add your NHS email I,d, and ‘Primary care and ICB staff in North East London’ as your organisation.
  • Postal loans: We can organise a postal loan to you if you are unable to visit the library to borrow a book (https://nelftlks.koha-ptfs.co.uk/).
  • Document Supply: If you can’t find an article or a book in our collection, we can source it from other NHS libraries or the British Library for you.
  • Evidence search service: This free service will help you to find high-quality information to support clinical practice, patient care, service development and research. I’m always happy to help people to find anything they need to support their practice (where it’s for a formal education course, we usually offer an “assisted search” or “guided session” to help show them what’s available).  Contact me if you would like to access evidence search results of the topics below:

  • Current Awareness Service: This service helps to keep NHS staff informed of the latest developments in their field by providing them with regular updates on new research, guidelines, and other relevant information. We offer our personalised current awareness service ‘KnowledgeShare’, Prescribing bulletin, and circulates HEE’s Education bulletin, and Future Proofing Primary Care.   • Training: Free online training sessions are available for Primary Care staff and students on placement to help you improve your skills in finding and understanding evidence. We offer ‘Finding the evidence (literature search), OpenAthens overview, Critical Appraisal, Journal club, accessing online resources, and Healthcare databases such as Medline, EMBASE, and PsycInfo.
