URGENT – Product Recall of Similac Alimentum®

In March 2022, a national patient safety alert was issued (click here for alert), informing of the recall of Similac Alimentum ® due to concerns of possible bacterial contamination. Similac Alimentum® is an Extensively Hydrolysed Formula (EHF) and is typically used for the management of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA). The manufacturers have since discontinued supply of Similac Alimentum® in the UK since the recall.

Recent prescribing data from November 2022 to October 2023, shows that there is still prescribing of Similac Alimentum® across NEL.

This recall requires immediate action by practices in accordance with the advice provided below. Please advise parent/caregivers to immediately discontinue use of the product and return it to the place of purchase/dispensing pharmacy.

If Similac Alimentum® is currently prescribed

• STOP ALL Similac Alimentum® prescription(s).
• Alternative EHFs that can be prescribed (same quantity to be issued):
  • Aptamil Pepti 1®
  • Aptamil Pepti 2®
  • SMA Althera®
  • Nutramigen 1 with LGG®  
• Ensure patient has no allergies/contraindications to replacement product before switching
• Practices should not switch to an amino acid formula unless recommended by local community paediatric dietitians
• Send text message to parent/caregiver – “Similac Alimentum® prescribed for ……. (add name of child) has been recalled as a precaution by the manufacturer. We have issued an alternative prescription. Please return your remaining tins of Similac Alimentum® to your community pharmacy. The product may taste different but is a suitable alternative to your current prescribed milk formula
