Temporary residents in the UK

Posted on:

On behalf of Manx Care (Isle of man)

We have become aware of cases where patients attending hospital appointments or visting family in the UK for a short period have had their addresses changes on NHS system, resulting in them being incorrectly recorded as permanent UK residents.

As you may be aware, Isle of Man residents may temporarily travel to the UK for a variety of reasons, including to access secondary care services not available on the island or to visit friends and family. WIn some cases, they may also experience urgent medical needs while in the UK. While we understand the importance of maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records, automatically updating a patient’s primary address without confirming their intention to permanently relocate can cause administrative complications and affect their entitlement to services both in the UK and on the Isle of Man.

We kindly request that practices take extra care when registering patients who present with isle of Man addresses. Specifically, we ask that you confirm with patients whether the address they provide is for a temporary stay or a permanent move.

Thank you for your attention in this matter and for your continued cooperation in supporting patient who receive care across boarders.
