Recognising World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

Posted on:

This week marks World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), a time dedicated to raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and reinforcing our commitment to responsible antimicrobial use.

Antimicrobials, including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics, are essential in treating infections. However, the misuse and overuse of these treatments have led to an alarming rise in antimicrobial resistance, making common infections increasingly difficult to treat.

As part of our role in infection prevention, here are some key practices we can all adopt to help tackle antimicrobial resistance:

  • Promote Responsible Use of Antimicrobials: Only use antimicrobials when prescribed by a healthcare professional and follow guidance carefully. Avoid unnecessary use to help preserve these essential treatments.
  • Educate Patients and Staff: Encourage understanding about why antibiotics don’t work on viral infections, the importance of completing prescribed courses, and the dangers of sharing medications.
  • Strengthen Infection Prevention Practices: Preventing infections helps reduce the need for antimicrobials. Adhere to hand hygiene protocols, use personal protective equipment correctly, and maintain rigorous sanitation standards.
  • Encourage Vaccinations: Vaccinations are a key preventative tool in reducing the spread of infections that might otherwise require antimicrobial treatment.

Our collective actions can make a significant difference in preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobials for future generations. Let’s continue to work together in promoting these practices and safeguarding health in our communities.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to infection prevention and control.
