Moorfields at Stratford – Update
A new comprehensive diagnostic and treatment eye care hub in Stratford has been opened. All ophthalmology services and patients previously hosted at the Sir Ludwig Guttman site have been transferred to the new Moorfields at Stratford site, on Broadway.
Moorfields at Stratford has additional capacity for both diagnostic and surgical treatments to support local waiting lists.
Please find listed below the Moorfield sites with their changes:
Sir Ludwig Guttmann (Stratford)
- All diagnostic testing, face to face appointments, medical retina services and injections have moved to Moorfields at Stratford. Eye care is no longer delivered from Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health and Wellbeing Centre.
Barking
- All diagnostic testing (around three quarters of all Barking appointments) will remain in Barking and will not relocate to Moorfields at Stratford. All consultant led face to face appointments have moved to Stratford.
Mile End
- All services have relocated to Moorfields at Stratford. Moorfields is no longer delivering eye care from Mile End Hospital.
The key changes include:
- Relocating all services from the Sir Ludwig Guttmann (SLG) site and transferring patient activity to the new site
- Converting the Barking service into an ophthalmic diagnostic hub in collaboration with colleagues at Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) and Barts Health NHS Trust. The patient type that Moorfields currently see at Barking are diagnostic glaucoma appointments only.
- All consultant led appointments at Barking Community Hospital have moved to Stratford
- Providing additional local surgical care at Stratford for north east London surgical patients who are currently treated at St Ann’s Hospital in Tottenham (from September 2023).
The Stratford site will feature:
- Ground floor diagnostic lanes for quick and convenient 45 minute tests, with results sent immediately to a clinician for reviewing remotely.
- Full range of services for glaucoma, cataract, general ophthalmology, and medical retina specialties – all three specialties treated on one site.
- Full-time specialist pharmacy and eye clinic liaison officer.
- Middle two floors dedicated to consultant led clinic space with an injection and laser suite.
- Top floor for high volume day case surgical procedures using two Surgicube theatres (opening planned for September 2023).
Patient engagement
They have engaged with their patients and taken their views into account over the changes, including a survey with around 600 responses and two patient led walks around Stratford with stakeholders. They will continue to work with them to ensure there is a smooth transition of their care to the new site.
