E-coli advice issued amid rise in cases

UKHSA and partner agencies are investigating an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) following a rise in cases. While the source of this outbreak is currently unknown, clinicians should be aware of the recommendations regarding sampling and when to refer, as set out in the UKHSA guidance cascaded on 3 June.

Approximately 10% of STEC cases develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). The risk of HUS is highest in children under five years of age. It should be noted that antibiotics are to be avoided in suspected STEC or HUS cases. General guidance on managing acute diarrhoea is available via NICE or consult your local infection team for advice.
