Changes to integrated wheelchair services in Tower Hamlets
The existing contracts for wheelchair services across Barking, Havering, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest are due to end on 30 June 2025. In light of this, NEL underwent a competitive tendering process in August last year as required by procurement rules and regulations, seeking a single provider to deliver an integrated wheelchair service across the five boroughs.
We are pleased to announce AJM Healthcare (AJM), the current providers for wheelchair services in Barking, Havering, Redbridge, and Waltham Forest, have been awarded the contract. Over the past seven years, AJM has consistently delivered high-quality services to these four boroughs and are pleased to extend their contract to now include Tower Hamlets as of 1 July 2025.
All service users known at the time of transfer will have been notified of the change, and we anticipate a seamless transition for Tower Hamlets service users to AJM healthcare. The team from the old Tower Hamlets provider – Whizz Mobility, will also be transferring into AJM Healthcare, ensuring continuing of care for patients. There will be no changes to community clinics in Tower Hamlets as AJM will continue to deliver these services however the main wheelchair service site will be located at Unit 18, The IO Centre, 49-71 River Road, Barking IG11 0DR.

All other borough referrals to wheelchair services remain unaffected, please continue to refer as normal.
AJM’s integrated wheelchair service will provide a complete end-to-end service for children, young people and adults living in the borough who have physical impairment from birth or acquired to be mobile and independent in their own homes and the community. AJM services include patient assessment, provision, modification, servicing, repair and review of personal wheelchair budgets for all those referred into the service.
The move towards a single provider means that we are able to further improve the consistency of access across north east London and provide a more streamlined offer for local people who require this service. Please note that wheelchair services in Newham and City and Hackney were out of scope for this procurement as they are provided effectively through existing contracts with Newham Council and Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust.
