BHR – Changes to Gastroenterology Referral Pathways – Important

Posted on:

As previously advised the Medefer Single Point of Access (SPoA) for routine gastroenterology referrals is no longer in place.

All referrals from the 1 June 2024 to Gastroenterology are subject to patient choice and GPs should discuss options of all available providers before referral. It is important to ensure patients are aware that the Medefer service is at least partially a virtual service and they will receive a telephone consultation as required along with any necessary diagnostics.  Please read the detail on eRS for more information. You should no longer use the Medefer SPoA form for referral as that was specific to that service.

Please note that BHRUT has opened their gastroenterology services for direct referral now the SPoA is no longer in place. BHRUT has increased their capacity to manage and triage any additional referrals the move from the SPoA may incur. An updated referral form will be available and uploaded onto the system in the upcoming week.

We are still in discussion with providers around future pathways but that may take some time to work through and in the meantime, we should follow standard NHS practice in referring patients to services.

We will update again on pathways as soon as we can and if you have any queries, please let us know:
