The North East London (NEL) Medicines Safety and Quality Group (MSQG) is a sub-group of the NEL System Prescribing and Medicines Optimisation (SyPMO) Board. It has members from across the Integrated Care System (ICS) and includes primary, secondary, mental health, and community care.
The aim of the MSQG is to provide organisational oversight and assurance on safety and quality improvement related to the use of medicines by collaborating with our partners and local communities across NEL, to ensure the best possible health outcomes for our local population.
One of the key priorities for MSQG is to support the implementation of the National Medicines Safety Improvement Plan (Med SIP) by focusing on the following:
- High-risk medicines (teratogenic medicine with a focus on valproate, anticoagulants, and insulin)
- Safe transfers of care (including implementation of the Discharge Medicines Service).
- Polypharmacy/Overprescribing – to include deprescribing and safe use of dependence forming medicines (Benzodiazepines Opioids, gabapentinoids, Z drugs)
- Learning from Patient Safety Events (LFPSE) response and actions to medication errors
- Support Integration of Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) learning methods across the integrated care system
