Guidance: Optimising Delivery of RSV Vaccination in General Practice

RSV vaccination is an essential service, and practices are required to offer vaccination to all eligible registered patients in line with the national programme. Practices are encouraged to work collaboratively with other practices, including through their PCN, to coordinate RSV vaccination delivery at scale. The Network Contract DES supports joint working and sharing of resources across PCN member practices, while the Primary Medical Services Policy and Guidance Manual confirms that service delivery arrangements, including any agreed variation in how services are delivered, must remain compliant with GMS or PMS contract requirements and be appropriately documented. Where practices choose to collaborate, they must ensure that eligible patients continue to be offered vaccination, records are accurately maintained in the patient’s registered practice record, and national contractual guidance for the RSV programme and vaccination services is followed in full.

Optimisation may be achieved by following the following steps:

  • Using robust call/ recall arrangements in line with vaccination and immunisation standards incorporated into GMS/PMS contracts
  • Having sufficient and convenient appointments as part of core vaccination and immunisation requirements
  • Ensuring appropriate clinical coding and reporting via GPES and CQRS as specified in the RSV contractual guidance
  • Early identification of eligible cohorts
  • Opportunistic vaccination alongside other appointments where clinically appropriate
  • Clear local process for invitation, follow-up and data quality
