Final Reminder: New MRI Access Criteria for Primary Care – Effective 17 November 2025

Posted on:

Following the communication sent on 31st October, this is a final reminder that new MRI access criteria for Primary Care which removes all MSK-related MRI options will come into effect from 17 November 2025.

CEG has now uploaded the updated MRI referral forms. GPs will now have access to a single referral form, titled ‘Non-MSK MRI Referral Form.’  Word versions of the updated referral forms are attached to this communication.

All patients requiring MSK-related assessment or support should instead be referred to the MSK Community Service via e-RS, where clinicians will triage and image as appropriate. Local MSK community services are fully prepared for this change and have been recruiting additional staff to manage referrals and maintain timely access to care.   CoraHealth and InHealth have both been informed of these changes and will be rejecting any routine MSK MRI referrals submitted directly from primary care. Practices should continue to use the urgent referral pathways where clinically indicated.

Please note the revised forms do not apply to City and Hackney primary care as they should continue to order Non MSK MRIs via T-Quest/Homerton Healthcare.

The GP Portal has been updated with information on the relevant pathways, and further updates will be made in the coming weeks to support practices during this transition. Musculoskeletal – North East London
