Immunisation & Vaccination Legal Mechanisms

Posted on:

The NHSE Primary Care Nursing Lead has had several conversations with registered nurses around the legal mechanisms for the supply and administration of medicines (vaccines explicitly= which are prescription only medicines).  Each GP practice should have robust governance in place outlining which legal mechanisms are being used for the supply and administration of vaccines. PSDs, PGDs and national protocols
In practice, our Healthcare assistants make a significant contribution to patient care and utilise general informed ‘consent’ processes for patients for blood pressure checks, ECG etc. However legally under Human medicines regulation Act  (HMR) vaccines are a prescription only medicine, and therefore the consent process together with the clinical assessment must be undertaken by registered healthcare professionals. HCAs have a key role in a delegated capacity to support administration of vaccines.
Please see below some videos and resources on the different legal mechanisms required for the safe administration of vaccines.
