Moorfields At City Road A&E referral guidance
Moorfields A&E is still receiving a very large number of non-emergency cases sent by community GPs.
Since the pandemic we have requested that GPs call us prior to sending so that we can ascertain the correct pathway. In many cases there are already available rapid access pathways or optometrist led minor eye care services. 70% of GP walk ins are triaged away from A&E to a MECS service or to a more local service.
Moorfields does not have a walk-in clinic, we have an emergency department for potential ocular emergencies. If the patient is already under another unit – please refer there.
We do not provide second opinions in A&E.

Minor Eye Care Services:
PATIENT INFORMATION – MECS – Primary Ophthalmic Solutions
What is a Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)? Symptoms that can be seen under the service include:
- Red eye or eyelids
- Dry eye, or gritty and uncomfortable eyes
- Irritation and inflammation of the eye
- Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye
- Recently occurring flashes or floaters
- In-growing eyelashes
- Recent and sudden loss of vision
- Foreign body in the eye
