Guidance for general practice on the coding and recording of the RSV monoclonal antibody immunisation product Palivizumab

Posted on:

Please find below information and guidance on coding and recording for your practice on the coding and recording of the RSV monoclonal antibody immunisation product Palivizumab.

The monoclonal antibody immunisation, palivizumab is offered to high-risk infants as part of the NHS RSV passive immunisation programme commissioned by NHSE specialised commissioning.  Palivizumab is delivered by specialist hospital services that will notify the infant’s general practice of administration as part of routine communications.

General practice colleagues must ensure that the monoclonal antibody immunisation Palivizumab recorded in GPIT systems uses the correct available SNOMED codes.

SNOMED codes for the RSV vaccination Abrysvo used for the NHS maternal and older adult RSV programmes MUST NOT be used to record the monoclonal antibody immunisation Palivizumab.

SNOMED codes advised for the recording of the monoclonal antibody immunisation Palivizumab:

ProgrammeProcedure NameProcedure code – SNOMED
NHS RSV Passive Immunisation ProgrammeAdministration of Respiratory Syncytial virus immune globulin, human (procedure)117089007
ProgrammeProduct NameProduct code – SNOMED
NHS RSV Passive Immunisation ProgrammeProduct containing only palivizumab (medicinal product)777050007

Please note that RSV vaccines (Abrysvo) given by NHS trusts are recorded in the NHS point of care system Record a Vaccination Service (RAVS) with automatic notifications being received by general practice IT systems, this negates the need to manually code and record these vaccinations.  For information, we provide the SNOMED codes for the RSV vaccination Abrysvo so they can be distinguished from those that should be used for Palivizumab:

ProgrammeProcedure NameProcedure code – SNOMED
NHS RSV Vaccination programmeAdministration of vaccine product containing only Human orthopneumovirus antigen (procedure)1303503001
ProgrammeProduct NameProduct code – SNOMED
NHS RSV Vaccination programmeAbrysvo vaccine powder and solvent for solution for injection 0.5ml vials (product) 42605811000001109

As a reminder, the cohorts for the routine RSV vaccination programmes are vaccination in pregnancy and those aged 75-79. If infants/children who are not eligible for the routine programme have been vaccinated with Abrysvo then this should be reported to London ICARS as a clinical incident at london.immunisationqueriescars@nhs.net   Please contact the London ICARS team with any clinical queries or to report an incident.

If you have any queries regarding the information above, please contact the London Immunisation team at england.londonimms@nhs.net
