BHRUT – Creatinine and eGFR results reported without SNOMED codes

Posted on:

In October 2023, The UK Kidney Association Working Group issued a Patient Safety Alert on the Lack of standardisation of kidney function measurement across the United Kingdom. Several recommendations were made including that:
All Trusts and laboratories should report the method of creatinine (e.g. Enzymatic)
and the specific eGFR equation (e.g. CKD-EPI 2009) used alongside these results.

To comply with this recommendation the test name description for Creatinine and eGFR was updated. There was no change in test code and this BHRUT did not anticipate that these changes would have an impact to the GP systems. BHRUT received feedback from primary care that the creatinine and eGFR results were being reported without SNOMED codes. This meant that these results would be transmitted into the GP systems as unmapped textual results.
